Fish Length-to-Weight Conversion

Choose the species of fish and input the length in inches.

Disclaimer: All weights are calculated averages derived from lengths of recreationally harvested fish only. Inaccurate results may be produced by entering a fish of unusually small or large size for this species.

The correct procedures for measuring the various types of fish are as follows:

Sharks and Sturgeons are measured from the tip of the snout to the center of the fork of the tail.

Skates and Rays are measured from the tip of the snout to the base of the tail.

Billfish and Swordfish are measured from the tip of the lower jaw to the center of the fork of the tail.

All other species are measured from the most anterior tip of the longest jaw (mouth closed) or end of snout to the posterior tip of the tail at its center line. This procedure is the same whether the tail forks in (e.g., Mackerels) or protrudes out (e.g., Flounders) and is called fork length.
